Year 1 - Elm Class
Welcome to Year 1
 

Hello and a warm welcome to Year 1 at Ombersley First School!

The Year 1 team consists of:

Miss Smedley - Class teacher

We aim to ensure that all children experience a smooth and seamless transition from the Early Years Foundation Stage to Key Stage 1, thereby building on the foundations that the National Curriculum depends on.

Year 1 is the most exciting year in the school! During the Year, our pupils will be exploring ideas, discovering different ways to learn, and will be enjoying a variety of fantastic and new experiences. We will endeavour to instil a love of learning in each and every one of the pupils, and to inspire children's imaginations using our terrific topics! 

We got to do lots of exciting trips in year 1, such as Warwick Castle and Hartlebury Castle. 

 
What does our curriculum look like in year 1? 
 
Phonics
  • In year 1, we use Floppy Phonics. 
  • If you would like to support your child at home, you just need to type in Oxford Owl and login in using our details:

Maths
  • In year 1, we follow the White Rose scheme of learning. 
  • We also do a Mastering Number starter every day which helps with our fluency. 
  • Our topics for maths are: 
  • Autumn term - Place value within 10, addition and subtraction within 10 and geometry. 
  • Spring term - Place value within 20, addition and subtraction within 20, place value within 50, length and height, mass and volume. 
  • Summer term -  Multiplication and division, fractions, geometry (position and direction), place value within 100, measurement (money), time. 
Writing
  • In year 1, we follow the Grammarsorous scheme of learning. 
  • We also do spelling tests weekly which children will come home with at the start of each half term. 
  • Our topics are:
  • Autumn term - lists and captions, the place value of punctuation and grammar, non chronological report and a recount. 
  • Spring term - Narrative, non-chronological report, setting description and story weave. 
  • Summer term - Narrative, Instructions, recount, and persuasive advert. 
 
PE
  • We use Get Set 4 PE for our lessons in PE. 
  • We also have specialist coaches in to support us in our learning. 
  • Our topics are:
  • Autumn term: Ball skills, fundamentals, sending and receiving and dance. 
  • Spring term: Dance, gymnastics, invasion games, gymnastics. 
  • Summer term: Net and wall games, OAA, athletics and fitness. 
Computing
  • We follow Purple Mash for our computing lessons:. 
  • Our topics throughout the year are:
  • Online safety, grouping and sorting, pictograms, Lego builders, maze explorers, animated stories, coding and tech outside school. 
History
  • We follow grammarsorous for our History. 
  • Our topics are: 
  • Autumn term - How have toys changed over the last 50 years?
  • Spring term - Where did kings and queens live through time?
  • Summer term - How did Florence Nightingale and Edith Cavell help to improve hospitals? 
Geography
  • We follow grammarsorous for our Geography. 
  • Our topics are:
  • Autumn term - Where in the world do I live?
  • Spring term - My local park. 
  • Summer term - Our school environment. 
Science
  • We follow Grammarsorous for our Science. Our topics are:
  • Autumn term - Animals including humans and seasons. 
  • Spring term - Everyday materials and working scientifically. 
  • Summer term - Plants and a focus on a scientist. 
Art
  • We follow Grammarsorous for our Art. Our topics are:
  • Autumn term - Sculpture. 
  • Spring term - Paint.
  • Summer term - Drawing.
DT
  • We follow the Design and Technology scheme of work for our DT. Our topics are:
  • Autumn term - toys
  • Spring term - sliders and levers
  • Summer term - structures
 
Music
  • Our music lessons follow Charanga. 
 
 
Easter Parade
 
We had a great time celebrating Easter by going on a class school parade to the church. We wore our beautiful Easter bonnets and song lots of songs.
Trip to Warwick Castle
 
We went as a class to Warwick Castle for our trip. We were given a tour of the grounds and we learned lots of new facts. We have been learning about Kings, Queens and Castles in our History so it was great to see a real castle!
 
After that, we got to see the birds of prey show, have a picnic lunch and visit the Horrible Histories maze.
World Book Day
 
We had a great week celebrating world book day. We focused on George's Marvellous Medicene as our story. We created our own Marvellous medicene and then had to describe it. 
 
On Thursday, we dressed up as our favourite story book characters. 
Trip to Hartlebury Castle
 
We went on a trip to Hartlebury Castle. We had our own Toys from the Past Workshop which helped us with our Toys history topic. 
 
We then got to explore the rest of the museum over the afternoon. 
Nativity at the Church
 
We went on a trip to the Church to perform our Nativity. It was lots of fun getting to wear our costumes and to sing in front of all the parents.
