Reading

Reading is a vital life skill and we are passionate about encouraging children to become enthusiastic and reflective readers. Through contact with interesting, challenging, high-quality texts, we aim to develop both reading comprehension and reading for pleasure. We aim to instill a love of reading by providing children with access to high-quality texts in our well-resourced indoor and outdoor school library.

From Early Years to Year 1, we use the Floppy Phonics Scheme and our School Reading Scheme is Oxford Reading Tree.
Guided Reading
Once children's phonemic awareness and phonics are strong enough, we use Comprehension Crushers to explicitly teach word reading and reading fluency through a range of activities including echo reads, timed reads, and fluency grids. Comprehension Crusher units last two weeks and the focus of the learning comes from the content domains specified in the National Curriculum. Each reading unit focuses on two or three of the content domains and the units are arranged to ensure complete curriculum coverage.

The following 'Vipers' documents will help you while reading with your child.

Vipers stands for:

Vocabulary, Inference, Prediction, Explanation,

Retrieval, Sequence (KS1) / Summarise (KS2)

These are key skills for reading comprehension and correlate directly to the national curriculum content domains for reading. Each content domain is taught at Ombersley during guided reading sessions using Comprehension Crushers units.
